i’m going to expand on the “what if foxface committed suicide” theory.
here we have a character who’s vastly intelligent, lithe, and small. she’s managed to survive thus far in the games through following the other players around and keeping hidden. she probably hasn’t killed anyone - we’ll go with her not having killed anyone for the sake of this theory.
according to the movie at least, she knows her plants and berries pretty damn well. i’m assuming she would have known them in the books as well - someone that clever isn’t going to overlook something like that.
this is a dystopian world. katniss and peeta aren’t the only ones who have noticed it. most of the other districts are suffering too, if not as much as 12. maybe it hit foxface when she came to the capitol and saw all of the food and the shiny lights and the extravagance. maybe it hit her long before.
maybe she doesn’t want to be a piece in their games.
she’s still alive, she’s the fifth one left. there’s also katniss, peeta, thresh, and cato. cato poses the most danger of a brutal death, and thresh is terrifying in his own right. katniss and peeta have a shot at going home together, the first two victors in the history of the games. together, they’re a lethal combination.
maybe rebellion is a little more important to foxface than winning. maybe she doesn’t want to be turned into some mindless killer for the capitol. maybe she thinks she can get in one last act of treason, because there’s nothing they can do to her now.
she’s following peeta. anybody else noticed how she follows people and probably has the opportunity to kill them while they sleep, and yet she doesn’t? and maybe she can sense that this is the beginning of something much bigger than her or the games in general. the girl seems to have excellent instincts. maybe she saw katniss and rue together.
anyway, she sees peeta gathering the nightlock, and she thinks okay, that’s a really painless way to go. she thinks okay, he’ll die if he eats it. she thinks okay, he’ll kill me if he sees me, but if i eat it first, he’ll find my body and know what a stupid mistake he’s making. she thinks peeta and katniss ought to win. maybe she thinks she’s done for, since the capitol will want a more entertaining victor than the girl who hid in the shadows.
and maybe she wants to show them that she still has a choice.
that her life will end on her terms, not cato’s or katniss’ or peeta’s or thresh’s or the gamemakers.
her. own. terms.
maybe she smirks a little at whatever camera is watching her, because of course they’ll be televising this, this final moment. maybe she bites into the berry with that same slow smile on her face, knowing that everybody realizes what she’s doing. maybe, she thinks, it won’t mean much, but it still means the world to her. she died without killing. she died still a human being. she died on her own terms, and she died painlessly.
i just think foxface was too intelligent to die by mistake.

This is beautifully written and makes perfect sense.
^^ my feelings exactly. how could someone that intelligent die in such a careless way
wow this is brilliant it’s interesting that she never got given a name maybe it was to show that katniss noticed her but...
